About Us

The Midwives’ Association of Sierra Leone (MASL) is an organization with a new name born following the support received from ICM and Cordaid to strengthen the Sierra Leone Midwives Association, which collapsed during the war. The rebirth provides an opportunity for the association to institute strong relationships with all stakeholders involved in the maternal and newborn health delivery chain, including government, faith-based, private providers of health service and community people. Grass-root women’s organizations, such as the Market Women Association (MWA), were identified as stakeholders with whom the association should work closely in charting the way forward. When these people are receiving the care they need, then midwives will know that the care they offer is of appropriate and of good quality.

To promote and protect the interest and welfare of midwives so that they can provide the highest standard of midwifery services in Sierra Leone.

The mission of the SLMA is to advance the science of midwifery in order to support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period by providing care for the mother, new-born and the infant through the provision of legislation and regulations, preventative measures, the promotion of normal birth, the detection of complications in mother and child, the accessing of medical care and the carrying out of emergency measures, and also to conduct health counselling and education within the family and the community.

SLMA values excellence in midwifery education. It upholds the highest clinical and ethical standards, professional responsibility, accountability, and integrity. The SLMA core values are aligned with the International Code of Ethics for Nurses and Midwives. Midwives have responsibilities to themselves as persons of moral worth, including duties of moral self-respect and the preservation of integrity. Midwives provide care for women and childbearing families with respect for cultural diversity while also working to eliminate harmful practices within those same cultures.
